Does your jaw click or pop when you open or close it? Have you noticed (or been told) that you grind or clench your teeth? Do you wake up some mornings (or all mornings) with headaches and/or a sore jaw? Have you been diagnosed with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder?
For me, yes to all of the above questions. I was diagnosed with TMJ disorder in 2006 after chipping a tooth. A year later, when symptoms had worsened (yes, we all do it), I obtained a specially-made night guard from my dentist. I was using it until the end of September 2015, when I became certified in intraoral massage. I haven't had to use it since, as I now work on the muscles inside of my mouth.
That's right...I no longer use the night guard.
I now offer intraoral massage to my clients, if indicated. It is pretty intense, at first. After all, how often do the muscles inside of your mouth get worked? It does get a little easier over time. This is why I only work with a few of the muscles during the first session, and then, include more muscles over time. It really isn't a stand-alone session, as the muscles of the neck, shoulders, and upper back also need to be addressed in cases where jaw issues exist. In other words, no, your mouth will not be open for an hour (that would hurt!!).
